Melbourne is one of the best Art Deco cities in
the world and many of the best buildings are located
in the city centre. In 1934, Melbourne celebrated
its centenary and this event provided a catalyst
for a building boom that continued for the next
six years to transform the city. Cost here...
This tour covers a variety of building types
in the centre of the city, commencing at Manchester
Unity building at Collins St. and concluding at
the T&G Building corner Collins and Russell Sts.
Robin Grow, author of the award-winning book
Melbourne Art Deco will communicate to the group the influences on
design, construction methods and the history of
occupants of Melbourne's interwar buildings.
From the Manchester Unity Building to the Majorca
Building, you will learn how to recognise the Art
Deco style under Robin Grow's expert guidance.
The use of terracotta 'self-cleaning' tiles,
distinctive patterning, and design details new
during the period will be highlighted.
